Objectives

1) Consolidate knowledge about the theories at the epicentre of Security Studies, Globalization Studies and International Relations and assess the heuristic value, as well as the limitations of classical theories, Critical Security Studies and alternative and post-positivist approaches; 2)Critically examine how Theorising about the International and international relations’ Practice are intertwined and its implications for Security Studies and for global security; 3) Design, define and test the applicability of theoretical frameworks and analytical approaches to make sense of the central questions of global security in the international agenda and processes; 4) Deliver Presentations, debate and write in a theoretically and empirically grounded fashion about Security Studies and International Relations’ central concepts in relation to the central questions in the international agenda of global security, to contemporary events and historical processes.

Prerequisites

Attendance is compulsory and the research students are expected to have read the recommended readings (journals’ articles and/or books’ chapters) and to actively engage in the Seminar’s debates with peers and invited guests. The students are expected to be able to read other languages than Portuguese.
