Objectives
This course aims at:
a) Providing the students with the knowledge appropriate for the management of heritage resources;
b) Presenting the fundamental concepts, their historical evolution and main theoretical and practical contributions related to cultural heritage and museology;
c) Presenting different approaches and solutions related to the appreciation , fruition and promotion of heritage testimonies;
d) Developing competences and critical thinking about the complexity and multiplicity of national and international heritage and museums reality.
Subject matter
Culture, heritage and museums. Heritage guardianship and policies: the Portuguese case.
Heritage: origin and historical evolution of the concept. The social construction of heritage. Contemporary panorama. Libraries and Archives. Intangible heritage. Safeguard policies, protection and classification. Economic value and appreciation of heritage.
Museum concept and historical background. The new museology, the critical museology. Museums as institutions: management and financing models. Museum planning and internal organization.
Storage: conditions, problems and solutions. Visitable Storages. Movement of collections.
Exhibitions: function, style and duration.
The educational function of the museum. The educational services. Cultural activities. Public and museums: contemporary challenges.
