Objectives
To expand knowledge related to clinical and psychosocial aspects involving the family (including the bases of systemic models and psychoeducational approaches), in the field of ageing and palliative care. To apply this knowledge in related research.
To develop positive attitudes towards family resources in clinical practice, and awareness regarding the impact of disorders and diseases in the family (as well the impact of some family issues in prognosis); to understand the importance of the family in mental health promotion.
To acquire/develop skills and competences regarding family interventions and related research.
Prerequisites
Subject matter
1) Family studies - contributions from Medicine, Psychology and the Social Sciences; neuropsychiatric diseases in the context of ageing and palliative care (e.g. dementia, parkinsonism, ALS, cancer);
2) The systemic model and circularity regarding family issues and mental disorders/diseases (as in medicine in general); family assessments in clinical practice and research;
3) Family (psycho)educational interventions: the basics (examples in severe mental illness, depression and
dementia);
4) An introduction to systemic family and couples interventions;
5) Family conferences in palliative care;
6) Case discussions;
7) Clinical and epidemiological research involving family issues;
8) Drafting a small project in clinical/systemic intervention OR research, related to family issues.

Teaching method
Lectures and seminars (also including video and role-play). The student will be guided through drafting the final project.
Evaluation method
Continuous evaluation and a final assignment (which will be also discussed as an oral presentation, to take place during the last session).
