Objectives
Knowledge of the main childhood and adolescence disorders in Portugal and the world; awareness of the general procedures in common childhood disorders, including urgent and emergent situations; Establish communication with the child or adolescent and family; collect patient history and perform physical examination; recognize severity criteria; interpret auxiliary tests, perform diagnostic discussion and propose therapeutic orientation; Current drug prescription; Elaborate a clinical report explaining comprehensibly and humanely the clinical situation, therapy and prognosis to the family; Understanding the importance of adequate behaviour in the hospital setting demonstrating attendance, punctuality, scientific rigour and intellectual integrity; development of transversal competences as autonomy and research ability, training and development of lecture skills.

Teaching method
The teaching-learning process comprises 4-weekly, 120 hour rotations with a 1:2 teacher:student ratio.
The students take part in daily clinical practice as well as in any training or scientific activities during their rotation. Whenever possible students will be in charge of patient care, taking clinical history, admission and discharge information, technical procedures and communication with families and health workers in a tutored medicine model. Each student will attend an emergency room period with the tutor. In the end of the rotation the students will present a seminar on pediatric themes (specific theme to be defined with the tutor).
Evaluation method
Final scores range from 0 to 20 and are calculated from the average of the tutor and seminars evaluation; students scoring 10 or above are approved.
