Objectives

Overview of the historical development of the concept of heritage, relating it to the main debates about artistic heritage in the contemporary world.
Acquaintance with the main international and national institutions, encouraging critical analysis of the charters and conventions on cultural heritage.
Contact with the main Portuguese cultural laws, in order to recognize the stages of heritage safeguard and main categories of intervention.
Understanding the current parameters of cultural heritage recognition in its multiple thematic approaches, in order to perceive both the specificity and transversality of the artistic heritage.

Teaching method

Theoretical-practical classes, with lectures, case studies discussion and field trips. Topics will be taught on lecture format, complemented by practical sessions based on the analysis and comment of images, bibliography and legal documents that will be previously given out.

Evaluation method

The final assessment should balance the following criteria:
a) two written tests: a midterm test and a final test (TE1x20%+TE2x40%)
b) critical review about a bibliographical work (CRx20%)
c) one field trip report (Rx10%)
d) attendance and critical participation in the sessions (APx10%)

The final semester grading formula is as follows:
CF=TEx60(20+40)+CRx20+RVx10+APx10
