Objectives

a)To acquire a good knowledge of the 18th. Century German Culture in its relation with the 17th.century;
b)To be able to read fundamental texts in the field of 18th. Century German Culture;
c) To define the concept of Age of Enlightenment (Aufklärung) and Enlightened Absolutism;
d)To help students organize a bibliographical research in order to conceive an oral presentation.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of German

Subject matter

a) From the Lutheran reformation to the pietismus of Philipp Jakob Spener and August Hermann Francke;
b)The works of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing: harmonization between art and ethics;
c) From Christian Wolffs systematic rationalism to Kants idealism;
d) Women´s contribution to the Enlightenment: the salonières;
e) Educational reforms and new pedagogical methods: the Philanthropinum;
f) Science and literature: the polymath (Universalgelehrter);
g) Voyages of scientific exploration : Georg Forster, Alexander von Humboldt;
h) Echoes of the French Revolution in Germany.

Teaching method

Presentation of the various topics by the lecturer; reading and discussion of a selection of texts covering the topics outlined in the syllabus;
- Tutorial supervision of the research work related to the final oral presentation chosen by the student.
- The teaching method is mainly reflexive and oriented to the contents of the CU. Students will present and discuss key texts.

Evaluation method

A mid-term test and a final test (together: 50%). Oral presentation (50%)
Participation in class is mandatory.
