Objectives
The Course Unit for Mediation and Education in Museums is part of the scientific field of Museology and Pedagogy and aims to offer a theoretical and practical perspective of contemporary curatorial and pedagogical concepts and experiences in museums, art centers and unconventional venues, aiming to provide tools that allow an informed and problematizing practice and an adequate communication with a great diversity of publics.

Subject matter
1. Background and contextualization of mediation and education in museums in the contemporary world.
2. Characterization of the methodological principles of mediation and education in art museums.
3. Curatorship as dialogue or soliloquy? The exhibitions as vehicles of communication. Exhibitions as living organisms: how reality tends to impose on projects. Concepts of mediation and education and their respective possibilities, in view of different audiences.
4. Educational contexts in Art Museums.
5. The Museum as challenge. Creating from scratch: from curatorial projects to reality. Identification of target audiences for various possible programs. Programming for diversity.
6. Exhibition practice as communication and education: the museum as laboratory, theater and (hi/her)storyteller.
7. Bibliography and curatorial and pedagogical methodology in museum context.

Teaching method
Theoretical-practical classes, with programmatic contents synthesized in power point presentations and in the critical analysis of texts of the bibliography.
The practical classes will focus on the development of projects based on the research, diagnosis and planning of its various phases, including communication.

1. The rigorous informed participation of students in the seminars, contributing to the deepening of the subjects under study - 30%
2. Individual work which may consist of
2.1. Exhibition proposal, with a complete plan of activities - 70%
2.2. Diagnostic report of an exhibition of a museum or exhibition venue in Portugal, contextualizing it in the program of the host institution - 70%
2.3. Approach to some of the themes proposed in the course of the CU, in the form of a scientific paper - 70%
2.4. Critical approach to the debate to be held in April 2018 at the ASVSF - 70%
