Objectives

1) To develop competence in the translation of pragmatic texts (particularly from the press, movies and
tourism).
2) To acquire a knowledge of the tools and the working methods as far as lexicography and terminology are
concerned.
3) To acquire professional language skills in word processing: dictionaries, synonym dictionaries, proofreading.
4) To create a terminologic dictionary.
5) To analyse the most frequent problems of translation (specific jargon, terminology, falsefriends
and
phraseologisms).
6) To analyse and reflect upon errors and possible solutions.
7) To practice and to develop strategies to find the best solutions (searches in corpora, databases, dictionaries
of specific areas, glossaries or paralell texts in Spanish).

Teaching method

The postgraduate seminars are both theoretical and practical with a strong interactive component on the part of the postgraduate students. The practical component includes oral contributions by the students and formal analysis of textual issues. The teaching methodologies will be based upon practical translation work and respective critical analysis; discussion and comparison of texts in the classroom; and individual and team work.

Evaluation method

Evaluation will be ongoing, but focussing on four main areas: 1) presentation and discussion of translations (30 %); 2) two tests (30%); 3) a written research essay (30%); and 4) oral presentation and discussion of the essay (10%).
