Objectives

At the completion of this course students will be able to:
a) Know the concepts and physical principles of earth observation
b) Distinguish earth observation systems
c) Understand the fundamental algorithms for digital processing of remotely sensed images
d) Apply those algorithms to digitally process remotely sensed images
e) Interpret geographical information obtained by digital processing of remotely sensed images

Subject matter

1. Concepts and physical principles of earth observation: i) electromagnetic radiation; ii) electromagnetic wave; iii) electromagnetic spectrum; iv) electromagnetic radiation sources; v) interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter; vi) interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the atmosphere; vii) spectral behaviour of vegetation, water, and soil.
2. Earth observation systems: i) sensor system resolution; ii) satellites and sensors; iii) main applications of earth observation systems.
3. Digital processing of remotely sensed images: i) the image as a data matrix; ii) geometric and radiometric correction; iii) enhancement and combination of spectral bands; iv) arithmetic operations and algebraic functions on bands; v) band transformation; vi) image classification (unsupervised and supervised)

Two methods are used:
- Expository lectures
- Hands-on lessons: extensive use of software for digital image processing by means of exercises.
In class teaching.




Evaluation method

Assessment includes:
a) Theoretical exam, 60%
b) Practical exam, 40%
