Objectives
a) To recognize the importance of the World Ocean for the functioning of the Earth system and the country;
b) To know how the ocean works and its interaction with the atmosphere and continents;
c) To know the main ocean resources, its importance and main forms of exploitation;
d) Acknowledge the main problems the ocean faces;
e) To recognize the importance of the ocean to Portugal.
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1) Characteristics of oceanic spaces
1.1 Ocean water properties;
1.2 Wave movements (waves, tides, tsunamis);
1.3 Currents and surface and deep circulation
2) Ocean Morphology and its banks
2.1 Continental margins and ocean floor;
2.2 Passive and active margins;
2.3 The Portuguese continental margin.
3) Biological resources, their exploitation and management
3.1 Life in the ocean;
3.2 Fishing gear;
3.3 Farming plants and animals.
4) Non-Biological resources
4.1 Salt and desalinated water;
4.2 Mineral resources
4.3 Energy resources
5) The importance of the ocean
5.1 Biological, economic, strategic and security values;
5.2 The United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (CDUDM);
5.3 The extent of the Continental Shelf;
5.4 Ocean´s importance for Portugal.

Teaching method
Teaching methodologies:
Lectures and participatory classes. Interpretation of texts, pictures and videos. Discussion of case studies.
Evaluation method
Evaluation elements:
Written test [50%];
Written work (15-20 pages) supported by independent research and / or field work [35%] and oral presentation [10%];
Participation and attendance [5%].
Note: According to the FCSH Assessment Standards, the proposed evaluation elements to introduce students in the first class may suffer readjustments, particularly in the percentage weight of each element.
