Objectives
a) To increase the knowledge of Brazilian literature; b) To understand the central problems of development and present of Brazilian literature, by reviewing the major debates at decisive moments and reading the works that are linked to them;
c) To acquire knowledge about the Brazilian contribution to world literature, deepening the study of some key players for this contribution; d) To acquire knowledge about the problems of world literature, relations between countries and literature, the problem of national specificity of literature and the historicity of literature notion; e) deepen the knowledge of literary theory, the experience of literary reading and the mastery of literary analysis techniques.

Subject matter
This course will focus on the reading of a series of late works by some of the foremost Brazilian writers in the 20th Century, allowing for a different take on these authors’ oeuvres and their connections to different critical problems and traditions. The following texts will be discussed:

Lectures with integrated discussion.
Evaluation method
The final grade will be the result of three different elements: two written classroom assignments (35% each) and one paper on the topics in the syllabus (30%).
