Objectives

a) To acquire translation skills into the foreign language in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities;
b) To develop linguistic proficiency in written German;
c) To analyze the specific characteristics of various texts;
d) To make aware of the differences between the two languages;
e) To develop analytical skills and flexibility;
f) To learn and employ a variety of means of research.
g) To develop the ability to reflect upon and self assess their own translations

Prerequisites

German language competence level A2.2.

Subject matter

a) Practicing translation into the foreign language in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities (incl. Tourism).
b) Translation issues (specific terminology, phraseology).
c) Error Analysis.
d) Resolution strategies (corpora, data bases, dictionaries, glossaries)

Teaching method

Analyzing and translating texts from Portuguese into German, correcting texts translated by fellow students, systematizing of translation knowledge in general and of technical texts in particular, creating conceptually organized glossaries, seeking examples of scientific translations, tests, correction of tests.
Reflection on the translation process and strategies.

Evaluation method

Assessment:
Coursework: 33,3% - Active participation in class; translation of texts, with and without preparation, individual and in groups, in class and out of class; critical analysis of translated texts and difficulties; autonomy and ability to self-monitor
Formal assessment: 66.6% - 3 class tasks
Attendance: minimum two-thirds of classes
