Objectives
With this curricular unit we intend to develop the capacity of:
a) Acquire linguistic notions that provide a better knowledge of the languages;
b) Use linguistic tools to analyze the French language;
c) Observe and describe phonological, morphosyntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discursive aspects;
d) Explain differences between modalities (written and oral) and registers (formal and informal);
e) Observe and understand the (synchronic) varieties of the French language.

1. The French language in the world and its varieties
2. Linguistics introductives notions
3. Phonetic and phonological characteristics of French
4. From morpheme to word: word formation processes
5. Some constructions characteristic of the French language: syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discursive levels
6. The French language according to the modality (written and oral) and the register (formal and informal)

Teaching method
The course includes lectures and practical classes, seeking to involve students in the learning process.
Evaluation method
The evaluation consists of two written tests (60%), problem solving and exercises (30%) and participation in the class (10%).
