José António de Almeida
Opening date
October
Fees
2750,00 Euros/year for all students.
Schedule
It depends on the working method of each training course. The working time for the classes will be agreed with each PhD student, or when there are more than 10 students in each year, it will be agreed with all students of the programme.
Education objectives
Objectives
The Geological Engineering, and Earth sciences in general, are considered major fields of science in many developed countries in the world.
The industrial minerals and rocks, water, oil, natural gas and geothermal energy (energy) are essential and indispensable to today´s society. The geo, an interface with Civil Engineering, are present in all the work that they operate directly on the surface. Also, problems related to waste storage, supply and water treatment and sewage, pollution control and environmental monitoring and evaluation are considered at present the priority areas.
An analysis, however brief, of the sectors most related to Geology and Geological Engineering highlights the need for large number of geologists and engineers to geologists, whether active exploration and exploitation of natural resources (mainly water, natural stones , metallic and nonmetallic minerals), as support to projects of building structures and various infrastructures (roads, airports, ports, bridges, etc.). and planning, including the recovery of degraded areas in identification of skills for construction.
Careers
Large structures and infrastructure to be held in Portugal go through: roads and highways, new Lisbon airport, new crossings of the Tagus in Lisbon, new railways and the rehabilitation of existing TGV, road works underground (Lisbon and Oporto subway, road tunnels), harbors, landfills and storage of waste (municipal, industrial and nuclear), environmental restoration of soils, ETA´s, WWTP, coastline protection, storage of surface water, abstraction of groundwater storage of natural gas. Also the exploration and exploitation of petroleum and geothermal, as well as the rational management of soils, the prediction of natural disasters (seismic and volcanic activity) and natural hazards are in development sectors.
These activities will lack of technical and scientific as well as at project monitoring and implementation. In some, will even have a key role. The advanced training at doctoral level, will allow you to hit high levels of development which will certainly contribute to innovation and significant improvement of the work to develop.
The new PhD Programme in Geological Engineering is founded on the guiding principles and objectives underlying their integration into the European Higher Education. With this design, their Ph.D. will operate within national and international levels in highly competitive environments, governed their formation and organization of the course by high standards of quality.
Access conditions
Admission Requirements:
To enter the PhD Programme in Geological Engineering, the candidate must meet the conditions laid down in national law and in the normatives of UNL and FCT-UNL, and fulfill at least one of the conditions expressed in the following paragraphs:
Have a Master´s degree in the area of Earth Sciences, or legal equivalent, or a degree equivalent to an undergraduate in the area of Earth science with a number of credit units equal to or greater than 240. The candidate must have a final mark of fourteen values in these cycles.
Have a Master´s degree in the field of Earth Sciences and being the holder of an academic or scientific material that is recognized by the Scientific Council of FCT-UNL as evidence of ability to complete this course;
Holder of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum in the field of Earth science that is recognized by the Scientific Council of FCT-UNL under proposal of the Scientific Committee of the DCT, as evidence of ability to complete this course.
The recognition referred to in subparagraphs b) and c) of paragraph 1 of this article is based on opinions issued by two professors or postdoctoral researchers, considered experts in the scientific field concerned and appointed by the Scientific Committee of the doctoral program.
These activities will lack of technical and scientific as well as at project monitoring and implementation. In some, will even have a key role. The advanced training at doctoral level, will allow you to hit high levels of development which will certainly contribute to innovation and significant improvement of the work to develop.
PhD in Geological Engineering will operate within national and international levels in highly competitive environments.
