Education objectives
The PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC) aims to prepare researchers with the ability to carry out independent research work and leadership in innovation processes in the scientific area of Electrical and Computer Engineering, both in the university environment or in business environment.
Beyond these broad objectives, the following specific objectives are established for each of the specialties available:
- Control and Decision. Developing skills and capabilities to develop mathematical models, formulate, analyze and solve complex problems in scientific areas of Control and Decision, including optimization, stability and robustness, supervision of industrial processes and decision support systems.
- Electronics. Provide advanced training in the area of electronics and design of integrated circuits, including skills of research and development in this area.
- Energy. Provide knowledge and develop advanced research capabilities and projects in the area of Electricity, including traditional and alternative sources (sustainable), and covering issues of generation, transmission, management and optimization.
- Signal Processing. Develop capabilities for modeling and signal analysis (spectral analysis and ARMA linear models, time-frequency distributions, etc.). As well as their implementation in innovative areas (eg area of biomedical applications).
- Enterprise Collaborative Networks. Provide advanced training in the area of Collaborative Networks including virtual enterprises, virtual organizations and their environments of gestation, professional virtual communities, etc.. In addition to these theoretical and role models, aims to acquire skills in analysis, design and management of new collaborative structures and their technological infrastructures of support.
- Robotics and Integrated Manufacturing. Provide advanced training in the field of Robotic Systems and Integrated Systems and Intelligent Manufacturing, including the acquisition of research skills and project in advanced robotics and automation services. Will also be acquired capacities for analysis and design of complex systems, characteristics of distribution, and properties / emergent behaviors.
- Computer Systems and Perceptional. Acquisition of advanced knowledge on issues associated with the development of computational and perceptual aspects including modeling of complex evolutionary systems with learning ability, perceptual subsystems (eg image processing with artificial intelligence techniques) and computational models and technologies supporting thedesign of embedded systems.
- Industry Information Systems. Acquisition of advanced knowledge and skills in theoretical principles, modeling techniques, reference architectures, methods of interoperability support, embedded computing and computational intelligence, including research and project in the area of Information Systems applied to industry.
- Telecommunications. Give the students a thorough knowledge and research skills in telecommunications systems, including architectures and reference models, networks, protocols, wireless networks, structured, ad-hoc and mixed.
Besides the emphasis on achieving a work of original research, the course of study covers a range of issues commonly referred to as "soft skills" / "transferable skills" and that includes communication skills and technical writing, leadership and management time and resources , encouraging partnerships and teamwork, ethical and scientific intellectual property rights, organization of technical events, entrepreneurship and transfer of research results for the socio-economic aspects.
