Education objectives
Geological Engineering is a specialty that applies principles, concepts and techniques of Geological Sciences in solving engineering problems involving the Earth and its functioning as a geodynamic system.
The Earth Sciences and Engineering are considered as the main areas of knowledge in many of the more developed countries of the world. Are basic to the development of society and the welfare of Man. Natural materials, water, energy (oil, coal, natural gas, geothermal), construction and public works are essential and indispensable to today''''''''s society. The search and exploitation of natural resources, the issues associated with appropriate regional and urban planning and the resolution of environmental problems resulting therefrom, are some of the core activities of the Engineer Geologist.
The undergraduate degree in Geological Engineering, New University of Lisbon (LEG), aims to prepare graduates with solid basic training in the areas of Geosciences and Engineering Sciences which, with the field materials of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science , may be able to work in various fields of applied nature and technology.
The goals are consistent with the assumptions of the Dublin descriptors. The teaching workload is the average of 23 hours per week. Many disciplines rely on education supported the system of "blended-learning" program through Moodle. This program allows you to develop a direct interface with each student, launch questions, discuss issues or provide assessment tests.
The major intervention areas of future graduates in engineering geology are related to construction and public works and the exploration and exploitation of natural resources. It covers the fields of action and/or expertise that connect not only among other specialties of engineering (civil, mining and environment) as between engineering and geology.
Careers
- Provide services within the study to:
- civil works;
- exploration, collection and protection of groundwater;
- exploration and exploitation of aggregates for the construction industry;
- exploration and exploitation of minerals and ornamental;
- petroleum geology;
- urban and regional planning;
- Protection against Natural Hazards.

Evaluation rules
The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:
- Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
- Evaluation based obligatorily on an examination or a final project. In these courses there extists a form of evaluation similar to one of the aformentioned activities in paragraph 2 as well as a form of evaluation based on a final exam.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester with the possibility of foregoing an examination or a final project.
