Education objectives
Training of specialists in the areas of Earth and Engineering Sciences, after a first cycle in GE at FCT-UNL.
The professional skills of geological engineers at FCT-UNL since 1987 encompass three areas of employability: geoenvironmental engineering, geotechnics and georesources, both in Portugal and abroad.
The general objectives are:
- Expand the training received during the first cycle, allowing to increase skills and obtain further knowledge development with autonomy, namely, applying new methodologies and optimization of industrial processes in the pursuit of quality assurance and safety in engineering and taking into account the inherent social, economic and environmental impacts.
- Training broadband geological engineers, facilitating mobility in the profession according to market needs, nationally and internationally, whether for industry
and services, or for research and development.
Access conditions
1. Holders of a degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mining and Geological Engineering, Mining and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Geographical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Geophysics and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, related or equivalent graduations, with a minimum of 180 ECTS;
2. Holders of a foreign academic degree with the designations listed above recognized as meeting the objectives of a graduation degree. Requires approval of the Scientific Council of the FCT-UNL, after acceptance of the application by the Scientific Commission of the course.
3. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that might be recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Commission of the Master in Geological Engineering;
All candidates are ranked according to the following criteria:
1. Previous graduation classification;
2. Academic and scientific curriculum;
3. Professional curriculum;
4. Possible interview.

Evaluation rules
The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:
- Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
- Evaluation based obligatorily on an examination or a final project. In these courses there extists a form of evaluation similar to one of the aformentioned activities in paragraph 2 as well as a form of evaluation based on a final exam.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester with the possibility of foregoing an examination or a final project.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
