Objectives

At the end of this course, the students should have acquired knowledge, skills and competences enabling him to:

-       To acquire knowledge and skills about the biochemical mechanisms underlying human disease.

-       To understand metabolic processes and associated pathologies.

-       To be able to relate biochemical mechanisms with associated pathologies

-       To acquire knowledge about specific diseases, on a seminar context, and to be able to develop critical analysis, using the scientific literature.

-      To be able to search and critically interpret the literature.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in Cell and Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Microbiology and Biochemistry.

Subject matter

- Molecular aspects underlying several diseases. t includes injury and cellular homeostasis, genetic deficits, changes in metabolism, inflammation and infection, cancer and aging. Seminars on various diseases: metabolic, immune, cardiovascular, infectious, rare diseases, cancer and aging.

- Current therapies and methodologies in the context of understanding of human diseases.

Lectures can be given in Portuguese or English.

Teaching method

The course includes theoretical, theoretical-practical classes and seminars. The lectures will be taught using the "data show", accompanied by complementary bibliography previously available on the website of discipline.

The theoretical-practical classes and seminars will focus on discussion of specialized subjects. The seminars include lectures by invited speakers followed by discussions with active student participation. Also includes student’s seminars.

Evaluation method

The final test on theoretical class themes - (minimum 10 values) - 70%

Case resolution -5%

Quizzes- 10% (0-20)

Seminars (seminar summary)- 15%

Classification attributed to seminars: I (0), S (10), B(15), B+ (18), MB (20)

The final grade results from the weighting of the grade of all seminars.

Delays of more than 20 minutes after the start of the seminar class will be counted as an absence.

Absences at seminars imply a zero mark.

More than 3 absences to seminars - the practical part is considered to be not done.

The final mark (seminars+ case or theoretical part) is kept for 2 years.
