Objectives
During this Unit the students should be able to:
• Acquire basic knowledge about the mechanisms of the immune response, in the different steps of the immune response.
• Learning the molecular basis and mechanisms of antigen recognition and leukocyte activation
• Identify the role of immune dysfunction in autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiencies.
• Develop skills on the applicability of methodologies / technologies used in the study of Immunology in different areas, such as, basic research, diagnosis and new therapies.
• Apply knowledge in the presentation of the mechanisms of action of immunotherapies

Teaching method
The teaching of this course comprehends mostly theoretical and theoretical-practical lectures. Per day, there will be theoretical lectures, using “data show”, on topics of immunology, which are then complemented with theoretical-practical sessions related to this theme, including work group of scientific articles and themes. For each class there will exist questions of rapid response, to be discussed in the group at the beginning of the next topic.
Classe will be in English, in case of any foreign student
Evaluation method
The student will be evaluated according to the weighted average of 1) a written examination (50% weighting) which will include the themes explored in all classes, themes from the student’s presentations; 2) presentation of themes (35% weighting); and 3) participation and attitude in class, include discussions of scientific articles provided by responsible for the course (weighting 10%).
Every student enrolled must attend at least 75% of the classes.
In the case of repeated discipline, the evaluation obtained by the attendance of lectures and presentations is valid for two years.
